Pros

  • Fast-paced fighting action
  • The tag mechanics make the game a blast
  • Tekken's characters fit the art style very well

Cons

  • Not enough taken from Tekken
  • Game mechanics are controversial at best
  • Not as good as the high points of either series

Street Fighter X Tekken is a crossover fighting game pitting the fighters of the Street Fighter and Tekken games against once another. The game is intended to be the first in a crossover series, though Namco's Tekken X Street Fighter has been on hold for years.

In many ways, Street Fighter X Tekken is really a Street Fighter game that happens to host some of Tekken's greatest hits. The game play is definitely more Street Fighter as is the artwork. While the game does pull a few elements from Tekken, it really does feel more like an iteration on the Street Fighter formula in all the best possible ways. The game is quick, even for the genre, and the addition of the tag mechanics from Tekken makes game play a frantic and fun process. Even if you take away all the familiar characters, you're left with a fighter that stands up to the best in the genre.

There aren't a ton of downsides to this game. The gem mechanics are controversial at best, and one could argue that the game could take more from Tekken. If you enjoy Street Fighter, and you want a host of new fighters to fill out the roster, this is a great game. If you're coming over from Tekken, though, this won't hit the usual game play notes. There's no doubt who the primary developer for this game was, for good or for ill. If you can get past that, you'll find a fun fighter that's more than worth the space on your hard drive.
